Are there any limits in stretching?

(wersja polska - TUTAJ)

Natalia Maria Wojciechowska

PHILOSOPHY

The best way to answer questions of the philosophical nature is to ask questions, because they really give answers, and these questions bring another questions. So let's begin, shall we?

Does anything have any boundaries?

We cannot state that for sure. More than once, even scientists have proven that discovering something they could explain 100% after a month the discovery was no longer true, because new facts have come up, so the only limit is here and now. At a given moment in this very second, it can be clearly stated that something has borders, but are these the actual boundaries of a given matter?

Can we keep on continuously crossing borders?

If there are no borders, so what do we have to cross?
And if they exist, so going along with the philosophy contained in the previous answer - yes, of course, that we can always cross our boundaries - everyone on their own, because someone's boundary is different from our boundary.-

Since there are no boundaries, how are we supposed to measure things?

Measurement is simply relative and in many cases very subjective - what will we call a measurement?
If a measure is a thing accepted by the whole, then you can actually measure something, but are you sure the whole population is right?
If we are measuring it we can constantly measure something in comparison to something else.
In fact, we are both our own measurement and our own limitation.

What is the greatest limitation?

Any person who develops emotionally and intellectually, acquires more and more life wisdom and draws conclusions from life events, such a person is able to say that the more he/she learns and the longer he or she lives, the less he knows - if anything. This human being also learns that he himself is the biggest limitation simply by assigning to himself, for example, some qualities / desires and continuing with them invariably for years until he realizes that he is not like that at all and wants something completely different. So this is another very blurry topic.

There are millions of questions that can make you feel like you are on a shaky ground and at some point you may feel as if you are in strange suspension, but this suspension is very good for stretching, because we do not forget that stretching is a process and the process can last and last forever and will not stop, which gives us the feeling that this process and the possibilities of our body are endless. How does this affect our body and anatomical / physiological issues? Well:

Julia Chmielińska

BODY

From what I know I am a human being.
I have a body consisting of a certain amount of bones, muscles, etc.
From what I know I will not change into a lizard.
I have a body, like everyone that is aging, and it is a subject to different processes and changes.
I know that in order to maintain a vertical posture, certain muscles have been shaped in the way to maintain such posture and other vital functions:

- the muscles cannot be deformed,
- the muscles cannot be removed,
- the muscles cannot be ripped (although the function of smaller muscles, tendons, ligaments, the damage of which does not endanger life, may be taken over by larger ones without any health impairment)

This means that we are limited - our own body, but ...

Are there any limits within the body?

Natalia Kucia
Yes, of course - a healthy leg that is 100 cm will not suddenly reach 120 cm, but for example: a leg that has been injured and where some contractures have arisen and which, under the influence of improper balance/ load it has "shortened" because of that, it can be pulled out to its original length.

And whether a healthy leg that will be subjected to, for example, stretching on a wheel, will extend and get longer?? Maybe 1 to 3 cm (healthy) without bringing improper hypermobility, but will it affect the skin, which will start to look like a big bag? Probably it really will be like that.

When we assume that we do not care about unhealthy hypermobility and the overall condition and functioning of the body are there any limits then??

Ok, let's suppose we broke all the bones, we ripped out all the ligaments and tendons, etc., so in fact we have a soft corpse - there is still a yur skin that is limited material and can be stretched and stretched and stretched until it tears, so this proves that physical limitations exist.

The real question is:

Are we able to reach our private boundaries?

Yes and no.

Why?

Our brain is not used 100% by us, so it means that our body is used 100% neither. Therefore, we cannot determine where and what the boundary is.

We are also programmed to leave the emergency exit - this is our instinct self-preservation instinct - and only some people who are disturbed in psycho-physical development seem to have no limits, sometimes this results in death, and in turn such incidents tell us that healthy restrictions are good for us, these do not allow us to harm ourselves or to lose our lives.

What's more, we are different each day - we have a lot of stimuli - and every day our stretching sessions are different - we feel our bodies differently. In addition, do not forget that we are aging, and with age the body on reacts on the stretching stimuli differently and its quality is changing.

photo from Fotolia

Is it possible that can we infinitely extend the range of motion by extra millimeters?

Theoretically YES, but it is a very individual process.

It depends on time and pace and whether stretching sessions were continued or there was a break or whether the body was influenced significantly by changes: pregnancy, injuries, etc. It all also depends on what we start from, what our genetic predispositions are and how much time we spend on stretching sessions.

Can a person who is already sitting in a twine position on two chairs can stretch even further?

I would say why not?
For instance 1 millimeter in 10 years
It all depends on how we look at it.

Do not forget that the more you achieve in each field, the further achievements are not so spectacular, and for further progress you need to work much harder and longer, and besides, you should not neglect your stretching sessions, but at the same time you also should not force your body.

CONCLUSIONS

The body is going through a series of changes and the perspective is always changing, thanks to this perspective something that once seemed to be little now is much more and vice versa. This makes stretching constantly changing with the possibilities of our mind, thoughts and experience. I often see how stretching becomes a reflection of a current emotional state especially for women. I also know from my own experience that I constantly amaze myself and my body amazes me that something that once seemed to me "impossible" after a few months becomes an ordinary thing, which makes the appetite for the next millimeters grow, sometimes achieved in months or years. So it has been 21 years of stretching so far for me (I started stretching at the age of 14) I still stretch and I am convinced that I'm not even close to my limits. I'm constantly watch myself, watch the others, and constantly see progress, but ...

In order to achieve anything, even the smallest progress in any field (in stretching too) it requires plenty of time, hard work, patience and distance. I assume that stretching is like life – it is a way you can follow - non-stop.

AT THE END

I am a very stretched person, who at the age of 35 is still discovering a lot about the range of my motion, flexibility, the possibilities of combined my power of mind with the body, and so on, and I find out that everything is possible and from what I know borders are not there, as long as you do not force yourself.

Something that limits us beside our minds, it is our lifestyle and also the time.

If only we could live healthy, without stress, with daily routine of the stretching in harmony with ourselves and believing that the mind is able to change muscle density and tendon tension then everyone would be able to achieve twine position everywhere, on chairs and grow and develop skills in the field of stretching every day. If I was such a person then at the end of life I would possibly be able to answer the question if there are any stretching boundaries.

Before start stretching - get to know your body | Przed rozpoczęciem rozciągania - poznaj swoje ciało

(For English - scroll down)

To tyle

To świetna zabawa, a wiedza to świetne narzędzie! Do dzieła - buduj siebie i swój stretching pięknie, tworząc wspaniałe dzieło sztuki !!!

ENGLISH VERSION

Stretching is inter alia working on and with your own or/and someone else's body.

I can't even imagine how anyone could start stretching anyone without getting to know anatomy and physiology of human body! It's like a surgeon would start an operation on open heart without knowing what to do and what scalpel is for!

Also I can't imagine working with/on something so delicate as human body without understanding it or let anyone, who doesn't understand it touch me.

Getting to know what specific exercises are for, what effects they might bring, observing changes in body and connecting them with physicque and physiology is the only way to built very deep consciousness of the body and ability to create proper workouts (even just for yourself).

For those who are stretching or starting the process of stretching at the beginning it is not necessarily obligatory to get to know the anatomy, but sooner or later even copying, whether performing commands of instructor or performing exercises on your own will create a need of deeper analysis . Thanks to that analysis we will sooner come to certain conclusions and we will avoid making same mistakes all over again. Maybe then it is better to right away skip few level and start from learning basic anatomy and physiology before the first stretching workout to avoid undesirable effects?

The body is not an undefined and difficult to identify units. It has a limited amount of bones, muscles, tendons, systems, etc. and getting to know it (anatomy) and how it works and what are the reactions (physiology) is one of the keys (obligatory for stretching instructors!!!) of healthy and good stretching! Without this, don't even start, because you can hurt somebody or yourself.

Sure - we can accept the principle that we use something intuitively without recognizing the matter, the mechanism, etc. of the tools that we use. But then are we able fully and consciously without compromising health and life use these tools? Can we by doing something without thinking, just copying achieve the same results? Ok, so maybe let me ask another question which in a way will be answer to that one: Would we go to a plane led by a person who is not licensed, and really only a gardener not knowing what all buttons are for? No, of course not! So let's not let us not be such a pilots or allow stretching instructors be such a pilots!

The more you know - the more and better you see and the more you avoid doing harm to yourself/ others. Additionally as the person being stretched and knowing a lot you will be able recognize a good stretching instructor, (more about recognizing good stretching instructor - HERE)  and after all you wanna use services of person who you trust and you find educated and professional - right?

Zatem poznaj ludzkie ciało, czyli SWOJE ciało !!! To świetna zabawa, a wiedza to świetne narzędzie! Do dzieła - buduj siebie i swój stretching pięknie, tworząc wspaniałe dzieło sztuki !!!

Therefor get to know human body, YOUR body !!! It's great fun and knowledge is a great tool! This specific knowledge (body) you can us not only in stretching, but also during other workouts and also for example: creating good diet or other healthy habits. The more you know, the better, more consciously you are building everything around. Then just do it ! - build yourself and build your stretching beautifully, creating a wonderful work of art !!!

ENJOY YOUR STRETCHING !!!

Stretching at winter time | Rozciąganie w okresie zimowym

(For English - scroll down)

  • spada poziom serotoniny, dopaminy i beta-endorfiny

W ciągu dnia spada nam poziom serotoniny, dopaminy i beta-endorfiny.

To melatonina, zwana hormonem snu.

Zmniejsza się pocenie, a jednocześnie przyśpiesza metabolizm, by wytworzyć więcej energii.

- podnieś nam samopoczucie poprzez podniesienie serotoniny, endorfin i dopaminy
- przyspieszyć metabolizm poprzez uruchomienie pompy krążeniowej
- dodać nam energii dzięki podniesieniu ciśnienia krwi i stymulacji układu nerwowego

- stosować rozgrzewającą dietę - imbir, cynamon, chili i inne przyprawy rozgrzewające dodawane do potraw dają super rezultaty,

Sportowcy cały sezon utrzymują swoje ciało w średniej lub nawet wysokiej formie i przed nadchodzącymi zawodami dostosowują treningi do mającego nastąpić większego wysiłku fizycznego.

ENGLISH VERSION

Winter, like every season, has its own rights, its rhythm and its character. The majority of people associate it with low temperatures, lack of sunlight, weariness, lack of energy, somnolence, as well as artificial heating, dry skin and putting on weight. The majority of us perceive negatively these phenomena and it is not surprising – you only need to look at nature to observe that this is not a favourable time for the organism. During winter time, especially in countries lacking intense prolonged sunlight and with temperature below 0 Celsius degrees, nature slows down. Tree water circulation is slower, trees and other plants do not grow green, some animals migrate to warmer climates, others hibernate having previously prepared intensively for this season. No wonder our body refuses to obey us in winter time and we could almost forget about any progress in stretching. Why is that? Before answering to this question, it is worth to realise how winter influences our body.

Influence of winter on human body

As I mentioned before, winter means less sunlight and lower temperatures. That triggers different reactions of our organism, which in turn influence our mood and the quality of our every training session. Here are a few of the changes occurring in our body:
the level of serotonin, dopamine and beta-endorphin drops

During the daytime the level of serotonin, dopamine and beta-endorphin drops. As a result of the deficiency of these hormones, we i.a. tire more easily, our reaction to outside stimuli is slower, our intellectual capacity declines. Especially serotonin is important as it takes part in blood pressure and bodily temperature regulation, as well as in blood coagulation process and the stimulation of central and peripheral nervous systems.

  • Pleasure centres of the brain are not stimulated correctly, which we perceive as a mood drop and we become apathetic.

The shortage of ultraviolet sun rays decreases considerably the production of vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D not only facilitates the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus (the secret of strong bones and healthy teeth), but also regulates the desecration of insulin and reduces the level of bad cholesterol.

  • Winter excess of melatonin rocks us to sleep

Winter time also influences another substance important for our organism and which desecration depends on the amount of light. It is melatonin, also known as the hormone of sleep. Its level rises when it gets dark, which is why we feel sleepy. In winter, days are short and, consequently, the level of melatonin stays relatively high and we also feel heavy and less fit during the daytime. At night our sleep is disturbed more frequently: we keep on waking up or we have problems with falling asleep, thus we get up sleepy. High level of melatonin influences numerous internal organs. For instance, it inhibits the functions of thyroid which then desecrates less thyroxine (T4) and less triiodothyronine (T3). Due to this shortage, our metabolism slows down and we put on weight.

  • We start to lack oxygen

Chemically polluted air represents the greatest danger for our lungs. This pollution’s intensity is at its highest in late autumn, winter and in early spring, as the natural filters, i.e. leaves, are not there. At this time of the year in big cities, the level of oxygen in the air drops considerably and can even reach 18 per cent, an amount barely covering the minimum needs of human body. What is more, in low temperatures the blood vessels contract, impairing blood circulation and, by that very fact, the distribution of oxygen in the whole body too.

  • We protect ourselves from the cold

Our organism protects itself from the cold in different manners: blood vessels in skin contract in order to limit heat loss, blood vessels supplying some of the internal organs act the same, sweating decreases and our metabolism accelerates to produce more energy. All of these actions do indeed protect us from losing to much heat, but they may as well lead to an increase of toxic by-products of metabolism, especially as we tend to eat more meat and cold meats.

How does stretching influence us in winter time?

In consequence of all of the above said body reactions, brought on by specific phenomena, stretching has a different influence on our body and the organism’s response to it is different.

In winter conditions, when the organism is in a slow-down mood, one should not suspend one’s stretching sessions, because stretching can:

- make us feel better by raising the level of serotonin, endorphin and dopamine;

- speed up our metabolism by triggering blood circulation pomp;

- give us energy by rising blood pressure and by stimulating the nervous system.

However, all of this is just drawing the organism out of apathy, not building up an added value. What is more, an organism woken up from winter lethargy in this way will give in only to momentary stimulation and will go back to its previous state.

But this does not mean that with a well warmed up training room, with suitable clothes that will keep you warm and after a good warm up we could not have a great stretching session. On the contrary. We can even feel that our body, woken up from lethargy and red-hot after the warm up, is able to go deeper in stretching positions and that these position are more agreeable. What can happen though is greater soreness after the next day training, as well as greater that in spring and summer time stiffness after intensive stretching. Why? Because artificially warmed up body will cool down faster and more radically. Moreover, an organism tired by winter will more vividly experience the effects of stretching.

What can we do about stretching in winter time?

Stretching constitutes a part of nature. Only by observing nature and by employing its reflexions can we achieve good results. ‘Nothing by force’, ‘nothing against nature’ rules apply thoroughly. What does it practically mean? In winter time, rather than driving the organism to maximum tension and employing more active forms of stretching, as well as pushing oneself to set new stretching records, one should:

- opt for a pleasant keeping one’s form up;

- opt for more passive stretching types that resemble lazy morning-like stretching (I am talking here about the character of the movement);

- get enough sleep;

- opt for a warming up diet: ginger, cinnamon, chilli and other warming up spices added to our meals provide great results;

- not tense up and fixate on the maximum muscle power.

And what about athletes?

Let’s not forget that athletes (also those practicing winter sports) prepare the whole season for their public performances. Sudden waking up and a burst of activity is not their way to achieve the top shape. Throughout the season, athletes keep their body in medium or even high shape and, before a competition, they adjust their training sessions to the upcoming increased physical exertion. Also, throughout the years of hard work, their organism becomes less influenceable by external factors and more accustomed to the conditions which accompany a given sport.

Would ski jumpers and other “winter” athletes get better results if winter, or similar, conditions could be recreated but the competition would take place in summer? Maybe so, maybe the results would be even more spectacular. Or maybe to the contrary: the lack of more challenging conditions would be less mobilizing.

And what about dancers, gymnasts and other professionals using their bodies in a rather extreme manner: wide movement range and who perform and stay in stable shape non-stop during the whole season? Again, it does not come out of nowhere and overnight. These people prepare their bodies for such a kind of exertion for years, consequently they keep good shape even in winter time and they do not experience such a violent drop of performance. Nevertheless, they also are not able to trick the body and there are more injuries linked to pulled muscles or tendons in winter than in other seasons. Why is that? First, the time dedicated for warming up usually does not change while the body demands that we create better conditions for it moving in full ranges. Low temperature does not aid in a good preparation of the body for working in very high amplitudes. It is easier to expose the body to heat loss and without warming up again, it is easy to get injured. Second, the body, deprived of vitamin D3 and under the influence of other effects of a reduced amount of sunlight, is more tired and less concentrated, which does not favour top shape, but increases the risk of injury.

Conclusions?

Winter does not make the best time for setting oneself new stretching goals, which (and I repeat to emphasize this fact) does not mean that stretching is going to be unpleasant or ineffective. However, one should particularly pay attention to creating suitable conditions, much more specific than in spring and summer, as well as not stressing out one’s organism.

And athletes should give special attention to: more scrupulous warm up, putting on warmer clothes, getting an increased dose of sleep, suitable diet which would well supply muscles during regeneration. Moreover, investing your time in longer walks, preferably outside the city, that would provide the body with more oxygen and thus diminish the risk of injury is advisable.

Summing up:

do not be afraid to slow down the pace a little bit in winter and give yourselves more time for warm up and sleep.

Benefits of stretching

(wersja polska TUTAJ)

In order to understand the nature of stretching completely, I will refer to very obvious benefits of stretching for some people and slightly less obvious for the others. This topic is as important as these benefits are simultaneously stretching targets for those who stretch, even the athletes (excluding - only partially dancers, gymnasts, etc., for whom stretching is just the mean to achieve a desired aesthetic effect).

Here we go, here are some of the most important benefits of stretching in a nutshell:

INCREASED MUSCLE LENGTH – It is not literally muscles’ extension as this is physically impossible unless by means of a transplantation. It is all about getting the greatest possible muscle length – functional length, and translating it to a language which can be easily understood the maximum possible range of motion. I call this bringing out the hidden potential, or going back to the state before the impact of adverse stimuli, such as stress, illness, poor diet, substances (stimulants). At some point there are some contractures or increased muscle tension on a daily basis, simply - the effects of the body being in use. Some of them we are able to control, and the other effects are absolutely out of our reach, that or either way these affect the full range of motion – whether the effects are controlled or not these lead to the fact that the muscle is not used its entire length. Regular stretching workouts are able to make as use our entire length of the muscles.

IMPROVING FLEXIBILITY OF MUSCLES – when do we say that something is flexible? The answer is: when more or less at the same time we are able to stretch to the maximum length or achieve its maximum range of motion and return to the previous form or when the body is able to adapt easily. And this happens to our muscles, they adapt to our movements by stretching and contracting and this ability can gradually be improved through proper and wise stretching workouts.

IMPROVEMENT OF SUPPLENESS - Suppleness is the ability to achieve a large amplitude of motion during short period of time. Just look at the acrobats who perform somersault easily or dancers who do the splits in the air to understand what suppleness really is, well more or less. Suppleness is often used as a synonym for flexibility, but this is an obvious mistake. Suppleness has dynamism of movements in its definition and flexibility does not. Good - stretching training, that is in combination with exercises, for example in the form of active, dynamic, isometric and static stretching during stretching workouts (about these types of stretching I will tell you later on) may affect the suppleness extensively, which is something that can be called agility at large range of motions.

IMPROVED BLOOD SUPPLY - this means more efficient delivery of nutrients such as the oxygen. Circulatory system is stimulated by a pump muscle - in particular caused by isometric contractions of muscles during stretching. I call it an internal massage of blood vessels and internal organs through pressuring them while stretching of particular parts the body. This improves the blood flow not only during your training, but also in general. if the stretching workout is performed on a regular basis and it is well combined – wisely combined that means taking into account all parts of the body. By improving the blood supply to organs, muscles work more efficiently and in addition the muscles (if the muscles are overstrained by heavy workouts with plenty of concentric contractions, causing too much tension they become extremely hard and rigid) regain proper tension, the ability to tone all the movements and that makes them less prone to injuries.

IMPROVED BLOOD CIRCULATION - to explain it I will bring up an example that I always share during my lectures:

Imagine that a person who does not work out is like a neglected artificial water tank. Water is still, is not filtered out (the metabolism slows down),

- the pomp work is getting worse (heart begins to work harder as it is overstrained among the other things by by-products of metabolism, which remain in the blood vessels or/ and intestines),

- such an unfiltered water decays and it is getting thicker and thicker (liver begins to have difficulties with removing toxins from the body),

- such person may feel worse and worse, this person is tired, because the body begins to have difficulties with the elimination of the above mentioned toxins and the blood circulates much worse, because the lumen of blood vessels narrows as it is contaminated by waste of the metabolism, fat and so on.

Stretching by running the pump (stretching – eccentric contractions, muscle contraction and isometric contractions) starts the stimulation of blood vessels, muscles, internal organs that speeds up the metabolism, and the walls of internal organs and blood vessels get rid of bad plaques these are atherosclerotic plaques. You could compare stretching to a good plumber who unclogs the blood vessels and thanks to that the blood has proper density, which greatly relieves the heart. This way the heart works much easier, it does not have to push blood through narrowed blood vessels, and for sure it will be much stronger and also it will work longer.

REDUCTION OF ADVERSE FRICTION EFFECTS WITHIN THE JOINTS INCLUDING SPINE - moisturizing synovial of the joints is produced only during the movement. The more gradational and moderate the movement is the more effective lubrication of the joints is. Daily use, but not the abuse of stretching will affect your body positively. I could compare this to taking care of the door locks with grease so that the hinges (here joints) will not squeak and creak and the doors (here the whole body) will work more efficiently and definitely it will last longer plus you will not suffer from joints including spine pain.

INCREASED JOINT MOBILITY – a joint is made up of bones, joint capsule, articular cavity, articular surface, but also among the other things ligaments. These keep the bones in a suitable distance from each other, but sometimes under the variety of stimuli and as a result of various factors, this distance may be reduced, because the ligaments are tense. The tighter the ligaments are and (thus less flexible and shortened) the more reduced the joint mobility will be. The good news is that the ligament is a soft tissue which may not be as flexible as muscles, but still it is flexible enough and therefore prone to the stretching. Thanks to the stretching ligaments’ tension will be reduced, so that the joints will have a greater mobility. These simply will not be that tight. There's more - thanks to this increased space the joint capsule may be stimulated better, causing the synovial fluid to be less thick under the influence of increased activity within the joint. There will be less resistance giving a feeling of tightness in the joint.

BETTER FRAME OF MIND - any physical activity is beneficial for the body – there are numerous changes in the whole body and these affect directly our mood. One of these changes is production of hormones responsible for reducing the pain sensation, the feeling of pleasure increases and hunger decreases:

Endorphins – these compounds are produced by the pituitary gland and simply make us feel happy and at the same time they block feeling the pain. This is why you may be addicted to physical activity and sometimes we experience euphoria during and after the training.

Serotonin – it is also responsible for a good sleep and a good appetite. Along with endorphins, this chemical compound will make your physical activity a pleasure. Besides, serotonin has a beneficial effect on learning and concentration abilities.

Dopamine - it is a neurotransmitter of pleasure. Numerous studies also indicate to its huge role in gaining weight. People with low number of dopamine receptors needs more of this compound in blood (and more food) to achieve the desired level of satisfaction than people with a standard number of receptors. Thanks to physical activity on a regular basis the level of dopamine in the body increases and therefore - the feeling of hunger decreases.

This all, however, is provided by regular physical activity and stretching as no other physical activity (apart from yoga, which is full of stretching elements) makes our body adapt to us and we feel more comfortable in our body outfit. To be honest you can compare it to fresh jeans, it shrinks after the laundry the same happens to our skin, muscles and the whole soft tissue because of the stress, improper diet, sedentary lifestyle, etc. It really becomes rigid and shrinks. Due to the stretching sessions the jeans here I refer to the body) will stretch out and definitely it will become comfortable. The comfort level will that high, so we will have a need to run, jump and so on. Such a state can only be guaranteed by stretching workouts.

DEEPER BREATH / MORE OXYGENATE BODY - Breath is life and in order to have the best possible life you need to learn how to breath well. It will not be possible without well prepared (stretched) intercostal muscles and here is where stretching comes with help. Because of stretching you can find breathing deeper and easier, your chest will not be sunken and heavy. Because of better breathing your brain and muscles (meaning: your whole body) will be better oxygenated, which will also help to think better and quicker, to learn faster, to move faster, to be able to react quicker and better.

At the end I would like to add that stretching brings a relief and thanks to its positive impact you may find yourself in a state of relaxation by means of muscle tension reduction. It is associated with better blood supply to the muscles and stimulation of the nervous system. It also unlike any activity gives you feeling of being able to literally reach further, which will have direct impact on your brain, which will be ABLE TO DO MORE. Remember body-mind it always goes together and can't be separated. You will not reach your deepest potential without physical activity and stretching as most sophisticated activity is great training for brain and great stimulator for the nervous system. Thanks to that it keep on developing, evolving by feeling more and feeling deeper into body. Stretching is like everyday massage for all your body and also never forget you are your body and your body is you - you need to take care of it well.

Why and how not to compare yourself with others in stretching?

(For English - scroll down)

ENGLISH VERSION

There aren’t two identical persons in the whole world. Nobody has the same fingerprints, eye pupils, identical body proportions, the density of skin or muscles, the same number of red and white muscle fibers of the same length. Nobody has the same size of muscle insertions and identical size of a heart. Everyone is absolutely unique and special, even if the external features are similar, what happens inside is completely different - it is impossible to copy that, because we are exposed to so many different factors, so recreating such a complex process of human creation as thinking, sensing being who stretches - this is absolutely impossible.

You can gather 100 people of similar, or very similar, almost identical body structure and skin color, hair color, eyes, those people may have similar blood composition etc. Their abilities to stretch as well as their susceptibility to stretching process and stretching effects can differ from each other immeasurably. Why does it happen?

  • One person started her/his adventure with stretching as a child and then stopped stretching for a long time and then returned after many years to such an intense activity, and the other person started at the same age but never stopped training, there was no break, or
  • One person is vegan, and the other one eats meat
  • One works on a regular basis from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the other person’s routine is from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m. or
  • One person is easily affected by stress, and the other one has a greater distance to the surrounding reality, yes, the stress affects muscle contractions and due to that they become much harder and that makes them less prone to stretching
  • One person may have different inherent degree of hypermobility of joints, which has significant impact on the range of motion and the way each individual feels stretching.

I really could provide you with plenty of such examples, but this does not change the fact that everyone is unique, and as much you can be motivated by someone else’s achievements, at the same time you should understand and be fully aware of the fact that you will never be exactly the same as the person who is stretching next to you.

What can one do to focus on yourself, on your sensations (proprioception), focus on not competing with the person next to you feeling that we you doing something by force and against yourself and your current abilities?

Sometimes it is very difficult, even impossible, because everyone has days with better shape or the days that a person feels hopeless, because every now and then we get a sense of injustice and frustration and this might affect the whole body and such situation has a temporary or more permanent impact on stretching abilities and regression in progress. This causes even greater frustration and a desire to do something by force. This in turn may lead to very serious consequences such as injuries, and even deep depression, which is hard to get out of later on. I have a few ideas how to overcome frustration. As a dancer, I used to be a very frustrated ballerina, I could see all kinds of imperfections in my own body etc. I went through many states and at every single one I would find different ways to deal with these obstacles (as an obstacle I refer to something that is bad and harms everything around). Here are my ideas:
  • When you feel like: l will never be like him/her / I will never be able to do exactly the same exercise – it helped me a lot telling myself: ‘seriously? You want to be like someone else? And why not be the best version of yourself? Exceptional white raven? Yet, I am unique and why should I be like someone else?’ And there are times when you are motivated and you want to be (in a positive way of course) like someone else, so work, work, work, this hard work can only lead you to your destination and you can find your joy in working’. This may be a cliché, but these approaches distracted me from my primary thought and really helped me focusing on what is the most important.
  • a frequent thought – he or she is so wonderful and everything just comes out right whatever she or he does - my motivating though ‘she/he can do it, so can I, perhaps not the same way, perhaps, according to some people not that well, but at least my way and I can be sure that I am not giving up”. And another version of me versus negative thoughts’ I will do as best as I can and maybe one day an exercise/ position will be so performed beautifully, and if not at least one day I will be able to say it was fun to battle against my thoughts.’
  • very common thought - I want to do it like that – take it easy, haste makes waste, and say to yourself: „I might be in the future like a bright shining star, and this inner glow will be more valuable as this will be due to my inner happiness and it will be entirely mine”
  • and now something quite different – I will not be able to be like someone else, perform the position the same way as the other person - my answer to that is this: ‘maybe you will not, but you will do it the other way – there is nothing wrong with this, looking for originality is such a wonderful thing’, or ‘it is only a matter of time, everything is possible, do not rush yourself just focus on the work to be done and be persistent.’
  • When you think - why do I need all this for and I will not be able to achieve anything or even what is worse I will stay far, far behind the others – when I have such thoughts I splurge myself with my very own ‘Natalia’s bet’
‘Let’s ssuppose that you do not achieve anything, but you still attend stretching session - and who knows, maybe in time, you will achieve some results?’ Let’s also assume that you stop stretching and after some time you feel very bad about it and regret that your made a wrong decision, then it is harder to go back to the level you were at and you feel that the time was wasted and the horrible thought comes up – regret - if I had not stopped my stretching sessions, I would probably reach my goals by now? Or let’s suppose that you stretch further and you will achieve something – perfect – keep going! So why would you stop stretching ?!’
  • When you think – I am hopeless / nothing I do comes out right, the others are much better than me - and I will tell you: ‘hey, complaining about yourself – well, you are the master of it’ – yes, I try to humor myself, and when I begin to laugh the endorphin level jumps up straight away – this way all the sorrows are gone.
  • a thought that comes to mind on a regular basis - it does not make any sense – and I have a contradicting thought, ‘and what does really make sense anyway? And if you really need to feel sorry for yourself and you need to wine about all at least do it in the splits position!‘
Generally speaking, I recommend to derive fun from your stretching sessions, and try not to focus on increasing or not increasing ranges of motion / in your positions, try not to look at the others with envy, because each single person is unique, amazing and simply wonderful. The process of stretching itself is a great value and feeling of increasing comfort in your own body and its greater possibilities as well as your mind possibilities, should be in my opinion main goals of stretching. The benefits that come with stretching are the most important, I will present you with all the benefits in my next article.

Stretching of the worse site | Rozciąganie słabszą stroną

(for English - scroll down)

  • mamy stronę prawą i lewą,
  • mamy przód i tył,
  • mamy dół i górę,

Tak m.in.: powstaje świadomość ciała.

  • przeciążeń mięśni i stawów,

Takimi prostymi sposobami możemy sprawić by ciało służyło nam lepiej i dłużej bez żadnych bóli oraz dyskomfortów.

ENGLISH VERSION

We definitely like what we are good at and it just comes out right. The more we like it the more we do it. However, it is well known statement that too much can cause harm - it absolutely refers to everything we do, and obviously I apply this to my stretching sessions.

Our body was designed so it always has two opposite sides - two directions that should be used to the same extent, or even with an emphasis on a side which appears to be weaker, which is less stretched, less trained, or since the birth just shorter:
  • We have the right and the left side,
  • We have got the front and the back,
  • We have the upper and the lower part,
  • We also can twist the torso to the left and right side, also there are sideway twists of the neck and rotational movements of the legs and hands as well.
When you read this, I bet you just analyze yourselves, I can imagine you are able to tell which leg of yours is stronger, which hand is weaker, whether you have a stronger back or your abdominal area, and generally speaking you know if you work harder on your arms (upper parts of your bodies) or you focus more on lower parts, you are also aware of your disabilities such as: if you hobble slightly or if it is pretty visible. And the last point is that you can perfectly tell which arm is longer as we are not symmetrical and so on.

The people who are aware of how physical activities, hyperactivities and emotions affect our bodies, those who are also familiar with the anatomy, physiology, are able to tell clearly (just looking at a trainee) which muscles are stronger and which are neglected ones, what basic personality traits are (these can be diligently hidden by means of a training) and what the person does in her/his everyday life - and all that without having the knowledge on the trainee’s habits.

Your body will show everything, it is clearly a map of our lives: it shows our activities, hyperactivities, also the way we sit, if we slouch, correct or incorrect work with the body. It is even possible to see what we eat and what stresses we are exposed to etc. You can observe and listen to your own body, which for some will become so natural after reading this article, because some things will be transferred from subconscious to your self-consciousness and the perception will begin to change. Yes among other things.: the body awareness will be increased.

It seems to be natural that we consider ourselves to be left-sided or right-sided, however is not entirely correct. It has already been proven that if we trained both sides of our bodies - not selecting one part or the other, which is more convenient for us- we would be able to tell that we are both-sided with every single activity. However our habits, laziness, lack of time, insufficient awareness, not enough knowledge on how the body works - these factors make us simply choose one side (leg, arm, etc.), which seems to be more coordinated, or simply stronger. Such daily/ frequently repeated activities (also hyperactivities) may often lead to:
  • muscle hypertrophy, (one-sided deficiency),
  • too much pressure on the vertebrae and / or other joints,
  • overwork of your muscles and joints,
  • unfavorable contractures that lead to, e.g. .: to scoliosis or incorrect position of the pelvis
and other similar factors, which in turn may lead to injuries in form of tears, muscle hyperaemia (muscle congestion), tendon ruptures, cartilage growths, hernias and also other serious injuries. Here are a few examples of what can happen if you pay more attention to working out only one side:
excessive exercising your abdominal muscles in relation to the back muscles can lead to morbid slouching,
carrying a backpack or a bag only on one arm can lead to a contracture of your neck and back muscles, which can result in scoliosis,
excessive working out of the torso muscles can lead to hypertrophy of muscle tissue and this without training your leg muscles may lead to serious knee injuries, ankle joints, which will not be able to maintain the weight of the muscle mass,
stretching in one direction only one of your legs in excess can lead to excessive and too rapid stretching of tendons and muscles, and this in turn may cause a tear or even disruption of muscles and tendons.

There are plenty of such examples and to prevent you from all the trouble/ injuries it is as simple as this:

Exercise the weaker part of the body with the same extent or even pay a greater attention to it, to intensity of your work-out sessions in comparison to your stronger side

When you catch yourself on doing the same thing once again that means physical activity of only one side of your body simply change your leg or arm or any other trained part even though it really felt uncomfortable in the beginning.

I could compare the above example to wearing the same pair of jeans and your thighs are rubbing against each other, if the pair of pants is used non-stop and the material is exposed to friction on a daily basis these will quickly be damaged and wasted - it is like wear and tear, so isn’t it better to have more than one pair of pants – this way you give the material some rest and this pair will be in use for much longer.

When a stretching work-out is combined with strengthening exercises it is possible to reverse many incorrectly performed daily activities/ movements and stop the impact of negative emotions through the stretch of very tensed muscles, but surely it cannot be a cure to all evil. If we do not pay enough attention day by day trying to bring symmetry in physical activities and perform inconvenient activities consciously – do something differently than usual, paying more attention to the weaker points of your body,(yes it is in opposition to everything convenient what we like) stretching work-outs may deepen our defects and lead to huge overstain. To avoid this I would suggest:
  • Start your stretching session with the weaker part of your body – yes, we all have a tendency to spend more time stretching the side we begun first than the other, and if we choose first the stronger/better part the disproportion between the better and the weaker part and the asymmetry between them will be more visible,
  • Set your alarm clock, so that the weaker side is being stretched slightly longer than the stronger one,
  • for example: do five more repetitions (eg .: swings, bends, etc.) - work - out the weaker side.

Implementation of these rules during your trainings will relieve more used side and at the same time that will strengthen and extend the neglected in some ways part of the body, and it may result in greater symmetry of your body, the pressure on the vertebrae and all the joints will be more even, and as I have already mentioned above this in turn this will bring your muscles a relief. Thanks to such simple solutions we can make the body serve us better and longer without any aches and discomforts.

From my very own recent experiences:

Quite recently (December 15th 2015), I broke my left foot. Apparently nothing extraordinary, but it caused a number of changes in my body and my mind at the same time. Until now, my left leg was my stronger (supporting) one, this leg was more stable and I used it to stand on while dancing and practicing ballet. Breaking my foot and immobilizing it in a cast without the possibility of standing on it forced my brain to create an alternative way of dealing with the situation and just after 4 months my right leg became as strong as the left one (supporting leg), I perform pirouettes equally well using my left and the right side, and my left leg become just as strong as the right one even though at the very beginning the disproportion between them was huge – what I mean is the range of motion when I lifted them to the side or forward. I could lift my right leg much higher than I could lift the left one. This occurrence and its consequences has just inspired me to write this article, which I hope, will provide you with a lot of benefits and also that this will encourage you to make your weaker side to be as strong as the opposite one.

Moreover, I hope that it will help you (as it helped me) to work on your other weaknesses and defects. Through hard work the weaknesses can become the advantages and strong points of your character.

ENJOY YOUR STRETCHING !!!
