ĆWICZENIA STRETCHINGOWE: Sznurek a'la Van Damme | STRETCHING EXERCISES: Van Damme split

- rozciąga i jednocześnie wzmacnia wewnętrzne mięśnie ud;

Poza rozciąganiem do sznurka i gdy ta pozycja zostanie opanowana, proponowałabym następujące ćwiczenia

Wnioski:

English version

For many of us, things that have been done by Jean-Claude Van Damme with his own body are inspirational, motivational and in many cases they are simply unbelievable. Right from the beginning of his career, Jean-Claude Van Damme delighted all viewers by his exploits, but in the memory of all fans there is one specific position - JCVD is famous for his splits performed in his numerous films, it is certain there is more than that. This position causes sleepless nights for many people, and at the same time it is unreachable dream for many – the splits – where Van Damme supports himself only with heels or with his shinbones. This is the same position that has been recently used in an incredible Volvo Trucks advertising viewed more than 77 million times - probably mostly by people who simply do not believe, or want to find an answer in this video how to do it.

His famous splits assured JCVD great popularity and the fame and thanks to that he became an icon of the action movies, until today he has been sought-after. Although the years of his sports glory are over (JVCD is 54 years old), nevertheless he still remains in great shape and he is involved with multiple projects, such as the advertisement above.

Who needs the splits in the air anyway?

This form of exercise - the splits – extremely advanced and designed for people who are very experienced in both stretching and muscle strengthening - it is a very impressive position, as well as strengthening exercise for the thigh muscles, hips, spine, and even the abdominal area.

As part of acrobatics, a show, or to show off this always brings out strong emotions, including the applause, and those who perform the splits hanging above the ground - whether it is high (on chairs, ankles, tabletop, or anything that is situated above the ground), or just floating over the floor. Such people are considered to be those who persistently worked to achieve that position and they are admired by the others who work regularly on their bodies.

This exercise:

- At the same time it stretches and strengthens the inner thigh muscles;- Strengthens the quadriceps femoris (four-headed thigh muscles)- Strengthens the structure of the knee, as it is hard to believe looking at this particular position, but in order to do it you need to tighten your legs without raising the calves and knees as much (if you do not contract the muscles of your legs the attempt to perform this exercise may result in the knees injury)- Strengthens the buttocks- Strengthens the abdominal muscles and the back - without them it would be impossible to keep the body in vertical position
- The result of this exercise is the possibility to lift the legs high to the side, twisting the legs beginning the twist from the hips, and many other positions used in dance, acrobatics and martial arts.

Who can do this?

Such position consists of two elements which cannot be separated:

- Extension
- incredible strength of inner thighs

and probably that is why it awakes such emotions, simply because it is extremely difficult and demanding. It is very hard, because it is not only challenging to stretch in order to prepare yourself to perform this sort of exercise easily - the splits, but also the strength of the muscles, so you can hold the splits position above the ground - without so-called ‘supporting leg’ as a ballet dancer when a leg is lifted up high and held in such position - it is a very demanding structure as well.

You should not make any attempts in order to perform this position without proper preparation, that means:

a) proper stretching,

b) strengthening leg muscles, the abdomen and the back. Any attempt to perform this position without the appropriate preparation may end up with muscle strain, adductor rapture, sprain or the other damages of the inner thigh muscle group. This position due to adding the force element will be much easier for stretched men, because men have a stronger muscle structure, it does not mean that women are unable to achieve such results.

If you have the abilities to perform the splits easily in such case there are no contraindications to strengthen the legs, in such extent to be able to reach this position, and vice versa if you have strong legs you can stretch to perform the splits (however many people have tried to achieve more difficult version – the sequence, if the muscles are too strong they prevent the body from a good stretch).

Exercises that make you ready for the splits

Apart from stretching enabling performing the splits I would recommend having the following additional exercises only when you feel that you have got it all under full control.:

Conclusions:

This is one of my favorite positions, it really strengthens the whole body, but the coolest exercises for this position are the strengthening ones and these stretching activities that are connected with this position. Actually these exercises, not the splits in the air only with support under your feet or calves I perform during group and individual workout sessions. Position itself is way too demanding for group activities and I would rather do it myself at home or at the end of the training.

And at the very end my video how to perform Van Damme split

ĆWICZENIA ROZCIĄGAJĄCE - mięśnie wewnętrzne ud oraz pośladki /// STRETCHING EXERCISES - inner side of thighs and gluteal muscles

(English version below)

Wtedy wiedziałam o stretchingu niewiele i wymyślałam ćwiczenia i metody instynktownie. Instynkt podpowiadał mi, że aby osiągnąć maksymalną możliwą i w sposób zdrowy elastyczność ciała - należy ćwiczyć ciało we wszystkie możliwe strony. Ciało musi pracować na wszystkie strony, by dojść do maksymalnych zakresów, czyli np.:

- przygotowanie do sznurka - pracując nad mięśniami wewnętrznymi ud trzeba pamiętać o rozciąganiu mięśni pośladkowych;

ENGLISH VERSION

When I began to stretch myself - in  more conscious way and in order to achieve the dream goal (not just like a kid sits in side split and is happy about it) - I was 14 years old. Back then I was already for two years in ballet school and so my body was for two years treated with ballet exercises without stretching exercises, which did stiffen my body - for no one told me how to properly work, how to perform the exercises not to tighten myslef (my muscles), and deffinately no one told me that you need to stretch (stretch even to avoid injuries, because excessively tired muscles and very tensed muscles are exposed to injury, probability increases by about 50%). Thus, even though I was quite stretched when I was a child of 4-5 years old, and then still quite stretched when I was 9 and 10, it is, unfortunately, that when I was 14 years I wasn't that stretched, flexible and feeling able to do things anymore. I had contractures under the knees, inner thighs muscles were so tight that I could no longer even think about doing anything that would even resemble a side split, etc. And from where therefore I had to start the stretching? From the very beginning of course -  step by step, inch by inch. And so I did, I started from the exercises that could help me in a wise and gentle, but also in effective way to return to the state from a few years ago and to create a basis for further stretching and reaching my maximum ranges. Back then I knew very little as I wasn't very experienced and all stretching exercises and methods were invented by me instinctively. Instinct told me that in order to achieve the maximum possible flexibility and remain with healthy body - the body must be exercisesd in all possible directions. Because how on earth a body exercised only in one direction can perform well? And how bending or stretching in only one direction or in one way can bring any effect? Even when I was 14 I knew that body will become more able to do things and will reach its maximum range easier, for example .:

- Preparation for the side split - working on the inner thigh muscles needs to be followed by stretching of bottom muscles;

- Excellent bending in the back - to achieve it you can't only bend backwards, you have to rememeber about bending forward and to the sides and doing curves to the right and left.

The body does not like the abuse of any of the muscles and to achieve balance in stretching and thus achieve personal records we need to concentrate on overall development and increase the range a bit by bit in each direction. That is why from the very beginning while doing "getting ready into side splits" and later on side split exercises, be sure to stretch the gluteal muscles, also along you should think about exercising the lumbar spine for proper position of the pelvis in a side split.

Below you will find the first exercises which can help to stretch inner side of thighs and gluteal muscles, remember to practise regularly and always after the warm-up, and only to the point where you feel the first signs that the body cools down.
